Atlasing.............

Map of Hwange showing Pentads Atlased (yellow squares)

After a very interesting workshop in Bulawayo on the SABAP2 (that is the Southern African Bird Atlasing Project "part deux") I have been chomping at the bit to get started.

Your area is divided into Pentads, each with a unique identity number and within that pentad you record the species you see as you go. I started the old fashioned way with pen and paper but recently downloaded a wonderfully simple program called Lynx Birdticks. There is a 30 day free trial period and it can be downloaded from Google play.

The software works with the GPS unit in my smart phone and is a delight to use. It identifies the Pentad i am in an notifies me when i cross into another. It starts a stop watch the minute i start recording and notifies me when each hour of Atlasing passes. The birds are all listed in an easy to find index and it is just a matter of ticking them as you see them.

once the "card" is complete you use the cell line and 3G to upload the data and the data is in the Avian Demography unit's database.

Log onto the website at http://sabap2.adu.org.za and register and get Atlasing!!!

follow this link to see the Pentads in Hwange that have been Atlased since the workshop

If you are a Zimbo...there is a huge amount to Atlas in Zimbabwe so get this software on your phone and Atlas while you travel the country.
