Waterfowl

The rains have arrived in a big way here in Hwange after an uncertain start to the season and there is standing water in every depression!! with that comes the waterfowl that we largely miss during the long dry season.

One of the very best places to see waterfowl is a pan called Ngamo in the extreme South-east corner of the park. I was in that area last week and saw all three of our teal species there at the same time. unfortunately the Hottentot teal were just too far out of the frame to include in the photo below but if you look carefully you will see that there are both the Cape Teal and the Red-billed teal in this one.

We have not had a real wet season like this one promises to be for a few years now. In 2007 we saw 3 Wattled Cranes at ngamo so we have fingers crossed that they will return to take advantage of these swampy areas this year.
