The joy of camera-trapping!

Recently we were lent a camera-trap by a friend to try and get pictures of a burglar that was repeatedly getting into our home and pinching things. We set it up with a view of the kitchen door and would check it after whenever we got back from being out somewhere.
Well we never did get any pictures of the culprit but the pictures we did get showed us a world that goes on when "no one is home!"

This got me thinking about the possible applications for camera traps and they are endless.
My wife and I are building our home on a small plot of land near Hwange (see http://dancelikeanelephant.blogspot.com) and the number of birds coming to drink at a little birdbath that Laurie put up is quite spectacular. I thought to leave the camera trap in the tree above it and now we are recording species drinking that we would not have seen otherwise.

An elephant was killed by a lion recently and as i did not get a very good sighting of the lion before it ran off i could not identify it. As identifying individual lions is a major part of what i do, i set up a camera trap above the carcass in the hopes of getting pictures of him when he returned........

Alas...no lion photos, But yet another Cape Griffon for the books!!!

Camera traps are great for applications where the presence of a photographer or observer may alter or effect the animals behaviour and you may be surprised at what you find drinking from your birdbath!!
