Birds in flight!

The new challenge is "Birds in Flight" and as you will know....it is a real challenge!

It always amazes me that there is nothing free in this world...in every area of life there are compromises and we invariably have to chose one thing over the other.

The different elements of photography are often like that and you have to chose which one is your priority or best suits your needs.
Depth of field (aperture), shutter speed and ISO all work counter to each other and each have different costs and benefits. An example of this relationship can be seen in the photo below:

f8
1/1000 sec
ISO 1000

In order to try and get the bird in acceptable focus I needed to chose a relatively small aperture (f8) to give me adequate depth of field. I also needed a fast shutter speed...a minimum of 1/1000th of a second (to freeze movement) and I should actually have tried faster, as the wings are still blurred.
The camera was set to aperture priority and with as small an aperture as that it would not have allowed that quick a shutter speed without increasing the ISO.
From my slide film days I still get nervous when "pushing" an ISO but these modern cameras allow for some amazing increments!
As you push the ISO so you risk the amount of "noise" in the image but as i say...there is nothing free in this world!!
