Yesterday my attention was drawn to a pair of Secretary birds Sagittarius serpentarius on a vlei making loud croaking alarm calls and staring into the trees. I followed their gaze and saw this sub-adult Martial eagle Polemaetus bellicosus sitting in a nearby acacia tree. I wanted to get my microphone out to try and record this unusual alarm call but my movement scared the eagle from its perch which in tern sent the Secretary birds into a panic!
Then as the eagle circled, a Lilac-breasted roller Coracias caudatus mobbing it just to show it that even bullies can be bullied.
