Guineafowl x 2

Helmeted Guineafowl feeding in open amongst elephants

Crested Guineafowl in much thicker vegitation
To my delight the other day I encountered a bird species that we rarely see in Hwange but occasionally on its periphery. I was driving through an area called the Gwaai valley which is just adjacent to Hwange and noticed a flock of about 12 of these magnificent birds. They were the Crested guineafowl, they are shy and are never really seen far from thick cover........the opposite of their cousins the Helmeted Guineafowl shown above feeding in the open amongst thirsty elephants.
