"Victor" the Vulture

For those of you that bird watch in Matebeleland.....keep your eyes peeled for a White-backed Vulture with a silver ring on his right Tarsus. There is a good chance his name is "VICTOR".

One day i was told that 14 vultures had been killed by the train near our office and so i raced to the spot to see for myself. There had been an  elephant killed by the train a few days previous and as the birds gorged themselves on the carcass near the tracks....they were too slow to avoid the next train.
I collected the carcasses and placed them in a row for this photograph.

A couple of days later i contacted the railways department to see if i could see their records for such collisions. We have lost at least 8 lions to the train in 12 years and so i was after that type of information.
I organised a visit and as i walked through their office door a White-backed vulture popped its head up from behind the air-conditioner!!
They said that it had arrived at the station stuck to the front of the train a week ago and national parks had no transport to pick it up. They had tried to feed it bread and water but not surprisingly he left that untouched.
To cut a long story short, my wife managed to secure permissions to rehabilitate him at a local wildlife centre and after organising a ring for him and about 6 weeks R&R ...Victor flew away!
